One of the best things about being an intern? Tickets to shows. First up, the annual Command Performance and Gala. Last Saturday marked the 24th year of the event.

Held at the beautiful AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Winspear Opera House, the evening presented performances from both traditional and non-traditional dance. Artists included Desmond Richardson of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Adiarys Almeida formerly Boston Ballet, Taras Domitro formerly San Francisco Ballet, Nicole Loizides and Todd Burnsed of Momix, Linshu Feng and Jie Zheng of Beijing Dance Theater, Dandara Amorim and Omar Roman of Ballet Hispánico, and Angelica Cassimiro, Jay Carlon, and Daniel Lupo of Australia’s Strange Fruit.

I witnessed the most intriguing and amazing night of dance. Not one piece disappointed. But, there was one performance in particular that stole the show. Australia’s Strange Fruit piece The Spheres (Excerpt) provided a break into the conventional stage dance. Arriving in morphable spheres on a single poll, the dancers displayed an outstanding combination of strength and artistry. They threw their bodies from one side of the opera house to the other, all the while staying in character. It was a true definition of captivation, entertainment, and dynamics.

My favorite thing about the Command Performance and Gala is that it is enjoyable for everyone. Dancer or not, you are guaranteed a night of incredible entertainment. I encourage you to consider going in 2019. You don’t want to miss a show that keeps getting better year after year!
